Soon after qualifying as a Reflexologist in my early 20s, I discovered that more and more women were booking into my clinic for fertility treatments. This sparked a huge curiosity for me, as there was so little evidence (due to lack of studies) to explain how Reflexology could help with fertility issues, but the results my clients were achieving said something were all the results we needed
Of course there are so many variables when it comes to pregnancy. We have to take into consideration the woman’s current health, her stress levels and her partner’s sperm health, but in this article, I will explain about how Reflexology is beneficial for fertility.
WHAT IS FERTILITY REFLEXOLOGY?
Reflexology is a healing mode, tracing back to ancient Egypt, China and Japan. Modern Reflexology was began as “zone therapy” by Dr. William. H Fitzgerald in the USA over a century ago. The “foot maps” which you see today, were drawn by Eunace Ingham in the 1930’s and are based on the human anatomy.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR FERTILITY
There are thousands of nerve endings in the soles of the feet, and when stimulated, they send messages to the corresponding parts of the body to return to homeostasis (ie. to work as they should.) Stimulating areas on the feet may be slightly uncomfortable, others may be painful, while others may release energy. The latter can be experienced as feelings of hot or cold, laughter, short-lived sadness or yawning. Each is completely individual to you, and it is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about.
As Reflexologists, we are also very sensitive to noticing this energy release, and also noticing physical symptoms through working on certain areas.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR REGULATING MENSTRUAL CYCLES
Irregular or missing periods can easily be regulated through Reflexology. By stimulating hormonal hot spots such as the pituitary gland, hormones will be balanced and menstrual cycles either lengthened or shortened to around the optimal 25-35 days.
Reflexology is also wonderful for creating a better blood flow, easing menstrual cramps and ceasing PMT and PMS.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR STIMULATING OVULATION
Reflexology is extremely effective at stimulating ovulation through working on the reproductive points of your feet (and later, it’s perfect for stimulating labour!) If you are unsure of your cycle, it’s beneficial to keep track either in a diary or using a tracker app on your phone.
Through experience, I find the best time for Reflexology is the week prior to ovulation.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR STRESS
Struggling to conceive can be a stressful time for yourself and your partner. Heightened levels of the stress hormones adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine can play havoc with your body, putting it in a constant “fight or flight” mode. Reflexology not only helps to re-balance these hormones, but also gives you a sense of relaxation almost instantly due to the release of oxytocin.
A relaxed, balanced home for an embryo to grow is the optimum state our bodies should be in.
REFLEXOLOGY GIVES YOU A SENSE OF CONTROL
As much as we dream of falling pregnant quickly and easily, it doesn’t always work out this way. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or through assisted methods, the sense of guilt, jealousy and disappointment can be all consuming, and it seems out of your control.
From experience, I have found by allowing women to gain some of their control back gives a tremendous mental boost, which in turn, mirrors in their bodies.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU HAVE REFLEXOLOGY FOR FERTILITY?
I often get asked how often should you have Rexflexology for fertility, and the answer is, If there is a lot of imbalance within the body, then it is best beneficial to have a block of appointments quite close to eachother to really get things going. After that it is maintenance.
If you are able to, then weekly Fertility Reflexology appointments are extremely beneficial, but one appointment a month will relax you deeply also.
THE BEST TIME IN YOUR CYCLE TO HAVE FERTILITY REFLEXOLOGY
BEST TIME IN YOUR CYCLE TO HAVE FERTILITY REFLEXOLOGY
Personally, I like to see a client at least twice during a cycle (once up to 5 days before ovulation, and shortly after.)
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT
If you are receiving Reflexology for fertility reasons, there are many ways you can complement your treatments between appointments. I am a huge advocate of using positive affirmations, and suggest clients write and repeat them daily
Using guided meditations is hugely beneficial to both the body and the mind, as is a gentle daily yoga practice.
Self care is such an important piece of the jigsaw, so remember to book in candlelit baths, evenings out with friends who make you laugh and plenty of fresh air.
Til next time,
I often talk about gratitude with my clients at my health clinic, as I truly believe it is the quickest and easiest way to come back into a positive place. Think of it this way. Say it’s the end of your work day. You’re tired but you’ve gone out to do the shopping....
You may identify yourself as an empath, or maybe you’ve never thought about it before, but feeling other people’s emotions (both good and bad) can be overwhelming and exhausting at the best of times. Office disputes, world politics, even overhearing arguments can...
With our lives being so incredibly busy, and our homes as areas to eat, sleep, bathe and entertain, it’s so important to carve a nook in which to relax. And not the sit-on-the-sofa-watching-Netflix type of relax either. A space where you can be still in peace, and...
